   The Towel of Humility

As a continuation last week's Rest Stop, I've continued to think a lot about humility.  I learned this week that the reference to "be clothed with humility" in 1 Peter 5:5 literally means to "put on the towel of humility."  This is a picture of wrapping an apron around your waist in preparation for serving others.

John 13:4-5 is a most beautiful picture of this truth:  "Jesus took a towel and girded Himself...and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded."

May we always keep a towel of humility with us, ready to serve others in a minute's notice!

Following are some brainstorming thoughts about depending on God to lead us to humble service in a proud world.

GOD GRANT ME THE HUMILITY TO...

...see my hands as Christ's hands serving others.

...hear You speak to me through Your Word.

...lead others to hear You through Your Word.

...trust Your Word as all-sufficient for all matters.

...not seek good books before Your good Word.

...talk out loud to You throughout the day.

...say "good night" to You each night.

...say "good morning" to You each morning.

...always know I am Your child in Your presence.

...know and bask in Your love and holiness.

...know You are always gazing upon me.

...know You never slumber.

...sense the presence of angels among us.

...discern thoughts from the enemy.

...fellowship with You in Your sufferings.

...do all things from my heart.

...not do things for achievements.

...trust You Christ are living and loving through me.
...believe You give me the desires of my heart.

...do what I find myself loving to do.

...surrender the need for numerical results.

...focus on people, not on results, in ministry.

...know that minor ministry tasks are not minor.

...not see any task as too menial for me to do.

...see hope when the world is hopeless.

...shine brighter as the world gets darker.

...be prepared to be imprisoned for my faith.

...rest in Jesus' finished work for me.

...be thankful when You chasten me.

...see other Christians as final work products.

...turn this world upside down with a few friends.

...not be afraid to minister outside the box.

...know deep joy during sad feelings.

...walk and pray with You often.

...be shunned and unappreciated.

...be persecuted by ridicule.

...cry when hurt.

...cry when family and friends are hurt.

...laugh with others and not at others.

...tremble while confidently sharing Christ.

...confront others in love.

...surrender the right to be loved by others.

...surrender the right to be right.

...surrender the right to be understood.

...never be defensive.

...be ready to give a defense for the hope in me.

...smile for no reason except as prompted by the Spirit.

...serve the down-and-out and up-and-coming.

...recognize sadness in a person's eyes.

...reach out and touch a sad person with joy.

...be real and not religious.

...be the dud of the party.

...pull out of traffic to "thank You" for a sunset.

...sing out of tune to You, knowing You love it.

...hear You personally tell me, "I love you."

...serve with others as the body of Christ.

...teach truth by testifying of truth from my heart.

...enjoy more things that cost time, not money.

...be open and vulnerable with others.

...mean yes when I say "yes," and no when I say "no."

...say "I love you" to others and mean it.

...live apart from the American dream.

...love my country where You have shed Your grace.

...walk triumphantly to my real home in heaven.

...lose everything I ever earned on earth.

...gain You alone, Christ.

...live life knowing You have fulfilled my life.

...live like You, Christ, with prayers on my heart.

...die like You, Christ, with a prayer on my lips.

CLOSING
Be encouraged!  The world does not honor humility.  But God gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5)!
