Unto the upright there arises light in darkness.
He is gracious and full of compassion.
His heart is established, and he will not be afraid.
PSALMS 112:4, 8
There is a holy tension in every Christian.
Christ indwells us in our re-born spirits. The Lord God says, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you...I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes" (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
And the power of sin indwells our unredeemed bodies.
I see the law of sin in my members warring against the law of my mind (Romans 7:23). This law, or power, of sin does not make our bodies sinful, it is just an intruder.
Our enemy tempts us to believe this is a gloomy liability for each of us to overcome. Our Savior assures us that this is a glorious opportunity for each of us to experience His overcoming Life!
REVELATION FROM GOD'S WORD
I recently shared these truths with a Christian man with a life-long besetting sin. I shared how Hebrews 1:3 reveals Christ as the glory of God, meaning He is the very outshining of God's Person. And because Christ indwells this man, the glory of Christ's life can shine out from his heart and through his personality.
After I shared this, the man suddenly paused and stared at me. I sensed that a revelation had come to him and the Lord was nurturing him to articulate back to me what was then on his heart. After a pause of a few seconds, he joyfully responded, "You know, light does dispel the darkness, doesn't it?!"
He began to see how Christ as the light of Life in him is the only way to overcome the darkness of sin's temptation. His best efforts, even seeking God's help, could never ever overcome sin's temptations.
AFFIRMATION FROM GOD'S WORD
I love how God's Word refers to Christ as the light that overcomes darkness, with darkness having no power over this light. In Jesus Christ was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it (John 1:4-5).
And now God in His grace allows His children to walk in Christ's light! Walk as children of light. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them (Ephesians 5:8, 11).
CLOSING
How do we walk in the light? By simply looking toward the light. By simply believing the Light of the world lives in us! In other words, by prayerfully beholding Christ through God's Word!
But we all with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18).
