For sin shall not have dominion over you,
for you are not under law but under grace.
ROMANS 6:14
It is common to hear statements about needing to balance many things in life, such as work and worship, time with our wives and time with our children, rest and exercise, etc.
And we even go deeper to ponder how to balance our own efforts with God's work in our lives. This is seeking to balance of man's free will and God's sovereignty. We also try to balance law and grace.
A PRECARIOUS WALK
The responsibility of balancing life is a burden the Lord does not want us to bear. The Lord does not want us to be precariously walking through life depending on how well we balance things. He doesn't want us to walk with fear of falling off one of the deep ends. That puts the focus on us and off of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our walk before Christ was actually precariously deadly. We all got "off-balanced" at the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Sin is independence from God which seeks to balance what is good in order to to do good and what is evil so as not to do evil.
Just thinking about balancing things is a balancing act! When I think about balancing things, I also think, "How much time and thought do I put into trying to balance these two things in my life right now?" Ugh. A precariously entangled walk indeed.
A PRECIOUS WALK
Through Christ, God has delivered us from walking in bondage out of our perceived need to be in control of balancing things. Instead of the word balance, God's love word to us is union -- union with His dear Son!
It is through God uniting us with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection that has re-birthed us into new creations vitally united with His dear Son! We can rest in being one with Christ rather than striving to balance two or more things.
Note the phrase in Him below. The Holy Spirit moved Paul to use this phrase 164 times in his biblical letters to express our union with Christ. Also note how stable and joyful this verse describes our walk in, and with, Christ is.
As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord,
so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him
and established in the faith...
...abounding in it with thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:6-7
CLOSING
Walking with Christ is the most precious walk! We truly are free! We don't have to fear going to extremes as we simply trust Christ and our being united with Him. Where He goes we go, and He will never lead us astray.
