I love Peter Lord's book Turkeys & Eagles (The Seedsowers, 1987). It is about an eaglet named Hagan who fell from his nest and was adopted and raised by a flock of turkeys on the ground. The turkeys did not know Hagan's identity as an eagle, so they assumed he was a buzzard. So, the turkeys sought to change Hagan into a beautiful turkey!
Thank goodness Hagan met up with a wise old owl who said, "Hagan, you're an eagle! An eagle my friend! You are a descendant of the grandest and highest of all birds. You belong high up there in the sky. Go now, Sir eagle, and soar!"
Peter Lord wrote: A chill of glory and revelation ran up and down Hagan's mighty wings. Instinctively, he knew who he was. All he ever needed was someone to tell him! What a wonderful statement about discipleship!
Hagan indeed opened his mighty wings to their fullest and with one tremendous sweep, he set sail into the skies along with a tremendous cry of joy and freedom!
SERVING
Although you and I are destined for flight at the highest of heights on the wings of the Eagle (our risen Lord), we are also destined to serve others at the lowest of lows.
We are "free as a bird" to compassionately relate to turkeys so that they, too, can know the truth entrusted to us about dying (with Christ) to being a turkey and being re-born (in Christ) an eagle for God's glory!
CLOSING
We can't imitate this humble service while at the same time being in such a glorious flight. Only Jesus Christ can do this. And He yearns to prove this through us!
As Peter Lord so well wrote: As a child of God in the risen Savior, you are going to rise above the little storms of life that drive turkeys into hiding, but that drive eagles into the presence of God!
Your brother in Christ,
