I had a very special time this past year being nurtured and equipped by the Lord Jesus to teach our annual study of Romans chapters 5-8. It was a special time of fellowship and revelation for all who attended 12 hours over three days of the study this past week. We plumbed deeply into each of the 108 verses.
As I prepared to teach Romans, I realized why many people, even some liberal Christian theologians, have always strongly maintained that Adam is merely a myth.
Following are two enormous reasons why this is not true!
IN ADAM vs IN CHRIST
Romans 5:12-19 emphasizes the contrast between Adam and Christ. Everyone in the world is born in Adam, i.e., born identified with Adam's sin and death. In other words, everyone is born into Adam's cursed family.
Salvation is God, by His grace, forgiving you of your sins and also transferring you out of Adam and placing you into Christ, i.e., rebirthing you into God's blessed family:
God the Father
has delivered us
from the power of darkness
and conveyed us
into the kingdom of His dear Son.
(Colossians 1:13)
God accomplished this transfer by uniting you with Christ through His cross and resurrection:
We were buried with Christ
through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was raised from the dead
by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
(Romans 6:4)
A person is either in Adam or in Christ -- there is no in between.
Therefore, the claim that Adam is a myth is a ultimately an attack on the cross of Christ!

The cross is where sin, death, and Satan were defeated once and for all by Jesus Christ. So, the cross is the focus of Satan's attacks on people today.
I believe with all my heart that those who claim Adam is a myth are being awfully deceived by Satan himself into ultimately believing the cross of Christ is not real either.
LUKE'S GENEALOGY OF CHRIST
The disciple Luke was a physician and an historian. Therefore, he was very meticulous in all that he wrote in his gospel narrative. In the opening verses, Luke testifies that he wrote his detailed narrative that we may know the certainty of Jesus Christ.
In Luke 3:23-39, Luke traces the specific names of men in 76 generations from Adam to Jesus. Therefore, Luke also wrote of the certainty of Adam. To believe that Adam is a myth, is to ultimately believe that Jesus is a myth.
Therefore, the claim that Adam is a myth is a ultimately an attack on the Word of God (through Luke)! |
Note that the original sin of Adam indeed was rooted in the enemy casting doubt upon God's Word.
The cross of Christ is the God's purposeful pinnacle of all of human history as revealed through His Word. The enemy will always attack the cross and the Word.
We can encourage each others to stand with each other as soldiers of the cross and to march together through this world with the sword of the Spirit (God's Word)!
