   Sufficient to Counsel
-
I used to think our duty as Christians was to help rescue people out of bad situations.  I now realize it is our calling to walk with people through their situations pointing them to Christ the Wonderful Counselor through Spirit-filled words of life from God's Word, the Bible.

This is our calling to make disciples of people through all situations in the world.

This Rest Stop is my brief articulation of God's call upon each of His children as discipleship counselors.

I am grateful to Bob Hoekstra (Living in Christ Ministries) for recently helping me grow in articulating this calling through his teachings "Counseling God's Way."

THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST
In this world, man counsels man unto solutions for their problems.  In the kingdom of God, we depend upon Jesus as THE Counselor who counsels man unto discipleship for His glory.

Solutions are not the purpose of Jesus' counsel, although solutions are part of the results.  His purpose for us is to follow Him.

His name will be called Wonderful Counselor.
(Isaiah 9:6)

THE SUFFICIENCY OF SCRIPTURE

God's Word is living and active, and the Holy Spirit actively counsels as we lead others to read the Scriptures for themselves.  Only God's Word, not man's intellect, is the light that overcomes the darkness of sin and unbelief.
Bob Hoekstra well said, "The Bible is the wonderful counsel of the Wonderful Counselor!"

Your testimonies, O LORD,
are my delight and my counselors.
(Psalm 119:24)

THE SUFFICIENCY OF THE CROSS

All roads in Scripture lead to the cross of Jesus Christ!

The word of the cross is the foundational truth from God's Word that a man can know he is forgiven AND has been given a new life in intimate union with Christ.  These truths are paramount for both the one counseling and the one being counseled.

The word of the cross is...the power of God.
(1 Corinthians 1:18)

CLOSING
I am sometimes asked something like, "Could you recommend to me a book about how I can help my friend's marriage (or some other issue)?"  I used to feel obligated to let others know that I know of a really good recently published book (aka, pride).

However, I am growing more and more to initially answer these types of questions along these lines, "I recommend starting with Ephesians, particularly chapter 4."

Not that there are not any good marriage books, but that God's Word should be a Christian's sole source of truth.

The best Christian books are not the ones where the author provide the reader with keen insights, but ones where the author of the book leads the reader to personally encounter the Author of the Bible.

I am also often asked, "Do you know of a good counselor for me?"  Again, my first reaction used to be to feel obligated to let them know of a Christian counselor.

Now my heart more and more seeks to answer with much compassion for the person, "Oh, can I first tell you about my personal Counselor?  He's the most wonderful Counselor!"

Encouraging myself and others to remain focused on the Wonderful Counselor and to remain grounded in His wonderful Word!

PS, If you sense the Lord leading you to become a financial partner with me and my wife Joy, I would dearly love an opportunity to share more with you about the continuous unfolding of discipleship ministry opportunties by God's hand.
